About the TATA TAS Program:

TAS is the Flagship leadership programme for young talent that mentors them for leadership at the TATA group, which covers over 100 independent companies.

TAS, generally known as the Tata Administrative Service, was conceived by JRD Tata in 1956, the late chairman of the Tata Group. He dreamed to create a talent, strong pipeline of the leaders who would steer the organizations and make them effective and using that pool of talent as a group resource one that could be tapped by companies across the Tata group of companies.

Today, TAS is the biggest premiere leadership programme in the country and has furnished almost every industry with top pioneers. TAS power lies in that it provides cross-functional opportunities through industries, organizations and geographies, international exposure, great players for professionals, and lifetime career mobility. TAS managers are thus, on a fast track programme of career growth, team players and leadership development.

TAS Applicant Eligibility Criteria for TAS In-House 2024:

Nature of Employment:

  • Open only to employees on permanent rolls of Tata Group companies and Tata Joint Venture companies (excluding employees on JV partner rolls).

Minimum Educational Qualification:

  • Full-time Bachelor’s degree in any discipline is mandatory.

Minimum Service within the Group:

  • As on 1st April 2024, applicants should have a minimum of 2 years of current continuous service in the Group.
  • Exception: All Management Trainees / Graduate Engineer Trainees/employees of other structured group programs who have joined the group on or before 15th September 2022, will be eligible regardless of experience.

Maximum Work Experience:

  • As on 1st April 2024, applicants should have total professional work experience post the Bachelor’s degree, of not more than 6 years, of which at least 2 years should be continuous service in the Tata Group on permanent rolls.
  • For the computation of balance work experience (if any), Full-time, Permanent, Part-time, Temporary, Consultant, Retainership assignments/employment will be considered. Short-term project internships will not be considered as work experience.

Performance Management Cycle:

  • Employees should have undergone a minimum of 2 continuous appraisal cycles within the Group as on 1st April 2024, with the exception mentioned in point 3 above.

Registration:

  • An applicant can register only once. Multiple registrations/entries are not allowed.
  • At the first stage, completion of the registration process is sufficient. Filling the TAS application form is required only after meeting the test score cut-off.

Test Scores:

  • Valid score from one of the following tests taken within the specified validity periods is required:
    • GMAT: Score from a test taken in 2019 or after.
    • CAT: Percentile from a test taken in 2021 or after.
    • XAT: Percentile from a test taken in 2022 or after.

Sabbatical / Long Leave:

  • Applicants currently on sabbatical, study leave, medical leave, or leave without pay are eligible with approval from the respective company HR department and provided they are on the rolls of the company and considered in continuous service. If selected, the applicant will have to join the program on the declared date of commencement.

TBLA Winners:

  • Top 3 winning teams at TBLA (Tata Business Leadership Awards) Finals (Winners, 1st Runners Up & 2nd Runners Up) will get a direct shortlist to the TAS Final Interview (skipping the Group Discussion and Presentation Round) subject to meeting all other TAS In-house 2024 eligibility criteria.

TAS applicant eligibility criteria for TAS Campus Selection Process:

TAS recruits candidates from the premium business school campuses in the country like IIM’s, XLRI Jamshedpur, FMS Delhi, S P Jain and TISS. For the campus selection round the shortlisted teams from each campus presents the case. The winning team from each campus will battle it out for the national finals.

Summer Internship Selection Process:

TAS separately works with select campuses across the country to provide summer internships for first year students. A rigorous selection process is deployed for selection of summer interns which is a subset of the TAS selection process described for finals.
Select students are offered an opportunity to apply for TAS at the end of their summer internships and can participate in a pre-placement selection process scheduled at that time.

TAS In-house and Campus Selection Process:

  1. Chairman’s Group Discussion Round
  2. Case Study Presentation
  3. IRIS psychometrics
  4. Director’s round of interviews

Round 1 – Chairman’s Group Discussion
In this round group of 10 people, one person is chairman and he/she will be given a case/problem statement (about 5 lines), then he/she have 1 min to read it. You aren’t allowed to make notes. Then he/she has to present the case to the rest of the group (the group doesn’t get to read the case) – 8 minutes of discussion where it is the chairperson’s authority on how to control the group discussion. 1 min to conclude, panel will inform you that you have 1 min remaining to conclude. The chairperson usually concludes. And this process is repeated for the whole group i.e. each participant will become the chairperson and present a different case to the group followed by 9 minutes of discussion. By the end the group would have discussed 10 cases for 100 minutes.
Having energy for 100 minutes is very important and presenting the correct interpretation of the case to the group is also very important. Topics will be usually business scenarios. This is an elimination round.

Round 2 – Case Study Presentation
All who gets through after the profile form short listing will be given case study and a presentation format. The case study has to be analyzed and presented in round 2.
Only who get through the GD round will be asked to make the presentation but all have to prepare. The whole thing is supposed to last for 30 minutes with 20 minutes for your presentation and 10 minutes for Q&A. This is also an elimination round.
Round 1 and Round 2 will happen on the same day.

Round 3 – IRIS – Psychometric Interview
This round is non-elimination; this basically tries to measure and quantify the leadership potential and is used in the next round of evaluation i.e. the Director’s round.

Round 4 – Director’s Interview
Here a panel of Tata Group companies’ MDs and CXOs will take your interview, there is nothing specific about the interview. It varies from person to person depending on what the panel wants to evaluate.

  • The profile form and appraisals
  • The comments from GD panel
  • The comments from the case study panel
  • The IRIS feedback. This round is supposed to take place around 24/25 April and results will be out on the last day.
  • Joining TAS.

TAS Case Study

This year, the Tata Administrative Services (TAS) Case Study is about Harley Davidson. In this case study the candidates are expected to discuss about the organizational readiness of Harley Davidson for international business. Candidates are also required to comment on Harley Davidson’s leadership style and it’s appropriateness for the company’s business objectives – globally and in emerging markets. The candidates also have to discuss about the operational challenges that Harley Davidson faced during their initial few years in India.

TAS In-House and Campus Selection Process application essay questions :

Essay 1: Describe a situation where you achieved something significant after overcoming obstacles.

Essay 2: Describe a situation where you initiated a new idea or approach and implemented it. How did you go about it?
